This is an experiential studio-based art therapy course for those who intend to work in the healing, teaching, and art therapy professions to identify and explore personal and professional issues related to using the expressive arts in healing. It offers an opportunity for students to personally experience the expressive arts therapy process in depth through exploration of multiple arts media and techniques applicable to work with individuals and groups. Students will discover and define self through the creative process and explore the expressive arts as an essential tool for social change, a means of personal transformation, and a means of artistic liberation which all contribute to positive change in self and others.

This experiential course will provide an overview of history, theory, practice, and assessment in art therapy. An examination of art therapy through its principal orientations to psychology and psychotherapy will be presented. Areas to be addressed include the use of art therapy techniques with distinct populations, ethical considerations in the practice of art therapy, and hands on studio learning methods and activities.

Required of all Visual Arts majors during their year of anticipated graduation. By participating in this course, each student's work will be publicly presented to the UW-Superior and greater UW-Superior community. Includes portfolio development and/or exhibition requirements. Open only to advanced Art students who wish to pursue an individual art problem in any medium of their choosing.
