Mission Statement

The mission of the Educational Success Center (ESC) is to support UW-Superior students by providing resources and advocacy to foster academic success, enhance student retention, and promote graduation.

The Educational Success Center (ESC) upholds this mission by supporting students in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for achieving their educational goals. ESC assists students in the following ways: making a successful transition into, through, and out of the university; developing the academic skills needed to take full advantage of educational opportunities; cultivating the mindset and habits that promote commitment and perseverance; and encouraging every student to develop the commitment and motivation to learn.

ESC provides all UW-Superior students free academic services and programs. However, some programs, e.g., Disability Support Services and the Bridge Program have eligibility requirements (as described below) and additional services will be provided within those programs. The Educational Success Center is located in Swenson Hall 1025.

Bridge Program 

The Bridge Program is designed to give students the information and skills necessary to facilitate or “bridge” their successful transition to the college academic environment. Program participants are enrolled during the time of admissions based on a variety of academic and application measures.

As a Bridge Program participant, students receive expanded support designed to give them the tools and strategies for academic and personal success at college.  Participants will build skills for academic and college success by enhancing the participant’s academic sense of self, practicing effective learning strategies, and connecting goals to academic and career aspirations. Through individual and group work, reflection, and application of strategies, students will gain valuable skills and become part of a community of students, faculty, and staff designed to support their college journey.

In their first semester at UWS, Bridge Program participants enroll in a full-time course load with relevant courses that meet university requirements as well as a specially designed College Success Skills class. As an integral part of the program, students also take part in focused academic advising and planning throughout the semester and participate in group or individual required study sessions.

Students must pass the course with a grade of “C” or better and have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher to graduate from the Bridge program. If course requirements are not met or college GPA is below qualifying levels at the end of the semester, enrollment in an additional skills course may be required.

Students may be enrolled in the Bridge Program as part of their acceptance to UW-Superior at the discretion of the Office of Admissions. Students qualify based on various academic factors, as well as additional college readiness indicators at the time of application. Participation in all aspects of the Bridge Program is required as part of enrollment.

Tutoring Services

Tutoring Services for all subject areas except for writing are located in the Educational Success Center in Swenson Hall 1025. We also offer 24/7 online tutoring. All tutoring services are free to currently enrolled UW-Superior students. The Educational Success Center employs nearly 40 students per semester as tutors in our office. Tutors provide one-on-one group tutoring in math, study skill strategies, and other content areas.

Tutoring services are staffed by student tutors who receive extensive training. Student tutors also have opportunities to further refine their skills through enrollment in tutoring practicums (IDS 305 Tutoring Practicum or MTHED 305 Tutoring Practicum). 

The Educational Success Center (ESC) houses tutoring services that offer students the opportunity to work with talented students who know what it takes to succeed in the classroom.  Trained peer tutors offer day and evening assistance in a host of student-to-student services including one-on-one tutoring.

The ESC offers a quiet study area and 2 computers for student use.  All ESC services are free to current UW-Superior students. If we don't have a content area tutor you are looking for, just ask us! We can find a tutor for almost any subject.

The ESC is open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. We do offer evening hours as well.  The ESC evening hours vary from semester to semester, so please contact us directly for our hours of operations at esc@uwsuper.edu.

24/7 Online Tutoring

Online tutoring services are available to both on-campus and distance learning students through NetTutor. NetTutor is located directly in your course’s Canvas. If you have questions or need support please call 715-394-8090 or email esc@uwsuper.edu.

Disability Support Services

Disability Support Services (DSS) staff are committed to provide reasonable accommodations for students covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability against persons in any program or activity receiving or benefiting from federal funds. Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act also require these institutions to make reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.  If there are questions, please email disability@uwsuper.edu.

The Disability Support Services Coordinator serves as a liaison for students with disabilities, and coordinates reasonable accommodation requests. To become eligible for accommodations, interested students must:

1. Complete the intake form available for first-time users.
2. Send Medical and/or Mental Health Provider form (which comes via an automated email after completing step #1) to your provider.
3. You will complete a semester-specific request form since accommodations are often linked to your academics.
4. Once steps 1 & 2 are complete, DSS will send notification letters to you and your semester faculty.

Developmental Education and Instruction

The ESC offers a variety of fundamental courses, programs, and offerings to help students transition to UW-Superior.  These options teach study skills, time management skills, and prepare students for success in their courses.  These include:

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free service offered to students in a select number of courses each semester. Participation is voluntary, but all students enrolled in the applicable courses are strongly encouraged to attend SI sessions. SI provides regularly scheduled review sessions of course material outside of the classrooms. SI review sessions are peer-led, informal seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings, predict test items, and develop tools for effective organization.

Specialty Services

The Educational Success Center is here to assist all UW-Superior students in cases of homelessness and to help coordinate confidentially the resources you need. If you, as a student, are currently without a safe place to live or are in danger of losing your housing, please contact the Educational Success Center immediately.
