English Program Student Learning Outcomes
All English Program Learning Outcomes support development and utilization of multiple transferable skills relevant to a variety of 21st century careers.
- Demonstrate the ability to read literary texts closely, with focused attention to language, content, and form to develop thoughtful analysis and interpretations.
- Demonstrate the ability to engage in scholarly research relevant to the discipline of English and analyze and synthesize scholarly research and primary texts into assignments effectively and ethically.
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of both major and minor texts and traditions of language and literatures in English, including their cultural and historical contexts.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally exchange information, ideas, interpretations, and differing perspectives as they relate to textual analysis and literary and scholarly research.
English Education (Grades 4-12) Major Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of major texts and traditions of language and literatures in English, including cultural and historical contexts in English literature.
- Analyze and interpret literary texts in a thoughtful manner.
- Demonstrate the ability to express and present critical interpretations of literature in clear and effective manners.

- Are prepared to support students' continued learning and expression in the English language arts (grades 5 - 12).
Broad Field Language Arts Education (Grades 4-12) Major Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of major texts and traditions of language and literatures in English, including cultural and historical contexts in English literature.
- Analyze and interpret texts (presented in multiple genres and media formats) in a thoughtful manner.
- Demonstrate the ability to express and present critical thinking and interpretations of texts in clear and effective manners.

- Are prepared to support students' continued learning and expression in the English language arts (grades 4-12).
